Artane, Dublin 5

This shrine is located on Lein Park in the Harmonstown/Artane area.  It's unusual in being dedicated to Pope John Paul II.

Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Fairview, Dublin

You couldn't have a church with that name and not have a shrine of some sort.  As to their grammar, we're saying nuttin.

Broadstone Station, Dublin

Back to Dublin today for a shrine perched up above Phibsboro Road and Constitution Hill at the former Broadstone Station.

I didn't spot the little sign at the bottom left until after.  "Rosary recited... ..."?

Another one from Drumcondra, this one from St Columba's Church on Iona Road.

Oblate Church, Tyrconnell Road, Inchicore, Dublin 8

We'd heard about the great shrine in the Oblates church. When we found this, we were a little underwhelmed.

She's lovely and all, but it's not a shrine it's a statue.

Then we spotted this:

Again, some lovely pieces, but not a shrine.

We found what we were looking for behind the church.

Saint Catherine of Alexandria Church, Meath Street, Dublin 8

Today's shrine comes from Dublin, just behind the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria on Meath Street.

Some nice photos by infomatique on flickr.

Ballyfermot, Dublin (2)

A second shrine from Ballyfermot, this one at St Matthew's Church on Blackditch Drive.

Ballyfermot, Dublin

This statue is located on the roundabout outside Our Lady of the Assumption Church on the Ballyfermot Road.

Carmelite Church, Aungier Street, Dublin 8

This one is cheating really, because it's not a shrine or a grotto, it's a statue, and if we start with the statues we'll never get finished. This is what's known as mission creep in project management speak. But I think it's gorgeous.

The conch shell! The gilding!

If you half close your eyes, it looks like baby Jesus is drinking a bottle.

Gray Street, The Liberties, Dublin 8

It's Saturday and time to give Mary a well-earned break.  Today we have a statue of the Sacred Heart protected by a lovely wrought iron canopy just off Meath Street in the heart of Dublin's Liberties.

Gardiner Street, Dublin

This little shrine (statue?) will be familiar to many Dubs from its location on Upper Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.  Does anyone know the history of it?  Did the house have a previous religious use?

Realt na Mara, Bull Wall, Dublin

This extraordinary monument is located at the end of the path on the Bull Wall near Clontarf in Dublin.  You can learn more about the history of the memorial on its own website, here.
